Retail Chain

Situation/Challenge:

This retailer situation stemmed from a very paternalistic leadership style, sagging sales, poor productivity and lost profits. Management had negotiated wage concessions with the labor union, including opportunity for incentives, providing that labor costs were reduced below budget.

Implementation:

Our leadership trainer designed and implemented the following: (10 participants)

  • Develop a strategic focus with leadership model to move the company forward and become profitable.
  • Design and implement a management and leadership development process for all levels of management (165 participants).
  • Design and implement a quality process specific to the organization’s need to: determine “best practices” and improve productivity; increase sales and profit margin; increase profits a cut above the industry; raise the level of participation and commitment of all associates (1,130 participants – 36 hours of classroom instruction).

Results:

The following results were realized:

  • After working with corporate leadership trainers for two quarters, the company became profitable for the first time in seven years.
  • While working with corporate leadership trainers, sales doubled in less than three years.
  • While working with corporate leadership trainers, a quality process was implemented at all levels company-wide that resulted in: greater participation and commitment; improved sales and profit margins; improved productivity; reduced labor cost from .0900 to .0700 percent.
